How it works

How TikTok Shop UK works out what you keep

The calculator follows TikTok Shop UK’s own commission formula, then adds the costs TikTok does not show you on one screen: creators, advertising, samples, shipping and the product itself. Every figure is per average order of one unit.

TikTok Shop commission

Commission = (net sales + customer-paid shipping + platform discount − refunds) × 9%

TikTok Shop UK, Platform Commission Fee. The rate includes VAT. A platform-funded discount is added back, because TikTok pays it to you.

Creator commission, averaged

Creator cost per order = price after your discount × creator rate × share of orders through creators

Only orders that come through a creator’s video, LIVE or showcase pay it. The rate is the one you set in the Affiliate Center.

Profit per order

Profit = what the customer pays − VAT − commission − creator cost − advertising − shipping − samples − landed cost

VAT and the reclaimable VAT inside the commission are taken out first if you are VAT-registered.

A worked example

The example loaded above is a £24.99 serum with free delivery, sold by a VAT-registered brand. One sixth of the price, £4.17, is VAT, which leaves £20.82. TikTok’s 9% commission on the £24.99 order total is £2.25; the VAT inside it (£0.37) comes back on TikTok’s invoice, so it costs £1.87. Sixty per cent of orders come through creators at a 15% commission, which averages £2.25 an order. Advertising at 10% of sales is £2.50, and shipping, samples and the product itself add £8.90.

That leaves £5.30 on an average order, a 25.5% margin. A direct order makes £7.55 and a creator order £3.80, so this serum could pay creators up to 30.2% before a creator order loses money. If you are running GMV Max, the break-even ROI on this product is 3.20: any campaign returning less than £3.20 of sales per £1 is losing money.

What it does not include

  • Returns. TikTok refunds its commission when a whole order is returned, but you lose the shipping and often the product. Lower the price or raise the costs to allow for your own return rate.
  • Platform-funded discounts and campaign fees. TikTok pays its own vouchers back to you; co-funded campaigns you join can cost you a share of the discount.
  • Cash flow. New shops are paid 31 days after delivery, then 8 days as standard6. Creator commission and samples are paid out before that, so a fast-growing shop can be profitable and short of cash at the same time.

Questions

About this tool.

How much does TikTok Shop take per sale in the UK?

TikTok Shop UK charges a 9% commission, inclusive of VAT, on most categories, and an effective 5% on specified Electronics and Beauty & Personal Care categories. It is charged on the order total, including shipping the customer pays and any platform-funded discount, and refunded if the whole order is returned. There is no monthly subscription. Creator commission, shipping and advertising are separate costs you set or choose.

Is TikTok Shop's commission charged on shipping?

Yes. TikTok’s formula is (net sales + customer-paid shipping fee + platform discount) − (net sales refund + platform discount refund), multiplied by the commission rate. On a £100 item with a £10 seller discount, a £10 platform discount and £5 shipping, the commission base is £95, so a 9% commission is £8.55.

Can I reclaim VAT on TikTok Shop's commission?

The commission rate includes VAT, and TikTok sends sellers a monthly invoice for the previous month’s commission. If your business is VAT-registered, the VAT on a business expense with a valid VAT invoice is normally reclaimable as input tax, which makes 9% cost 7.5% before VAT. Check your own position with your accountant.

What creator commission should I set on TikTok Shop?

The highest rate your margin can carry while a creator order still makes money, which the calculator shows as the creator break-even. TikTok’s own UK playbook gives 10% to 15% as an average rate, but a product with a thin margin may break even below that, and a strong-margin product can pay more to win better creators.

How long does TikTok Shop UK take to pay sellers?

New shops are paid 31 days after delivery. After that the standard settlement period is 8 days from delivery, with faster 3-day and 1-day tiers for sellers who meet TikTok’s performance criteria.
