TikTok Shop vs Amazon: which channel should a UK brand start with?

Amazon sells to people who are already searching. TikTok Shop sells to people who weren't. Here is how the fees, content costs and cash flow compare for a UK brand, and how to choose where to start.

The short answer

Start with Amazon if shoppers already search for what you sell, your product needs explaining, or you have no steady supply of video. Start with TikTok Shop if your product sells itself in a short clip and you can feed creators every week. Amazon charges a 15% referral fee for most categories plus fulfilment; TikTok Shop charges 9% but adds creator commission and content costs. Most brands use both.

Key takeaways

  1. Amazon captures demand that already exists; TikTok Shop creates demand through content. Match the channel to how your product is bought.
  2. TikTok Shop UK’s commission is 9% including VAT (5% effective in specified Electronics and Beauty & Personal Care categories). Creator commission, set by you, usually costs more than the platform fee.
  3. Amazon’s referral fee is 15% for most UK categories, with lower bands for some cheaper products, plus FBA and a 2% digital services fee.
  4. Cash flow differs sharply for new sellers: Amazon releases funds seven days after delivery; TikTok Shop holds new sellers’ funds for 31 days after delivery, falling to 8 days as standard.
  5. Judge the channels together on profit. TikTok content can lift Amazon searches for your brand, which TikTok’s own dashboard will never show.

From Robert Prime and the Mr. Prime team, who run Amazon and TikTok Shop accounts side by side for founder-led UK brands.

“TikTok Shop or Amazon?” sounds like a choice between two marketplaces. It is really a choice between two kinds of shopper. One arrives on Amazon already looking for something like your product. The other is scrolling TikTok and had no plan to buy anything until a video changed their mind. Mr. Prime runs accounts on both, so this guide compares them on the things that decide profit for a UK brand: demand, fees, content, fulfilment, returns and cash flow. If you have already chosen TikTok, start with our guide to how to sell on TikTok Shop in the UK.

Two kinds of demand

Amazon is a search engine with a checkout. Shoppers type what they need, compare listings, read reviews and buy. Your job is to be the best answer to searches that already happen. That favours products people look for by name or type: replacements, refills, supplements, tools, household essentials, anything bought after comparison.

TikTok Shop is discovery. Nobody opens TikTok to buy a specific product. People are shown a video by a creator, or by you, and the purchase happens in the same scroll. That favours products that show their value in seconds: a visible before and after, a satisfying demonstration, a clever design, a gift.

Neither is better in general. The question is which one matches how your product is bought today, and which kind of work your team can do every week.

Fees: the headline rate is not the cost

Amazon. The referral fee is 15% for “everything else” and most mainstream categories. Since January 2026 several categories charge less on cheaper items, such as 8% on Home Products up to £20 and 5% on Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements up to £1010. Add FBA fees if Amazon fulfils for you, and a 2% digital services fee on Amazon’s selling and FBA fees for UK sales10. Our guide to Amazon selling fees in the UK lists every fee, and the FBA calculator for the UK works them out for your product.

TikTok Shop. TikTok’s UK policy sets the commission at 9%, “inclusive of applicable taxes, including but not limited to Value Added Tax"2. Products in specified Electronics and Beauty & Personal Care categories get a 4-point reduction, which keeps them at an effective 5%1. The commission is charged on the order total including customer-paid shipping and any platform-funded discount, less refunds3. The policy page we checked is dated 18 September 2025, and we found no change to the UK rate in 2026 on TikTok’s seller pages as at 30 September 2026. TikTok runs frequent incentives for new sellers and for some ad campaigns, so check Seller Center for what applies to you. Our guide to TikTok Shop fees in the UK goes through each fee in detail.

Creator commission is the big one. Most TikTok Shop sales for a new brand come through affiliate creators. You set the commission rate per product, and creators are paid on revenue minus refunds4. TikTok’s own UK playbook suggests 10% to 15% as an average rate5. Add free samples, and often a fee for guaranteed content from larger creators, and the cost of selling through creators usually exceeds TikTok’s platform commission.

Two things stand out. TikTok’s lower platform fee is outweighed as soon as a creator takes 15%. And the TikTok sale made through your own content is the most profitable line in the table. The brands that do well on TikTok Shop usually build both: creators for reach, and their own content, which gets cheaper per sale the longer they keep making it.

To see what each channel really leaves you after fees and advertising, run your figures through the Profit X-Ray. If you advertise on Amazon, our guide to break-even ACoS explains how to set the advertising line.

Fulfilment: FBA and FBT

Amazon FBA stores your stock and picks, packs and ships orders, and provides customer service for those products11. Our guide to what Amazon FBA is explains how it works and what it costs.

Fulfilled by TikTok Shop (FBT) is available in the UK. You send stock to a TikTok-run warehouse and pay storage, per-item handling and shipping fees; TikTok charges receiving fees only for loose-loaded containers7. If you would rather keep stock yourself, Shipped via Platform, TikTok’s own shipping service, charges from a published rate card; a new card applies to parcels delivered from 1 November 20268.

In practice, many brands keep one stock pool and use Amazon’s Multi-Channel Fulfilment, a 3PL or FBT depending on volume. Whatever you choose, plan buffers for TikTok spikes: a video that takes off can empty a month’s stock in days.

Returns

On paper the two channels are similar. Amazon.co.uk and many of its sellers accept returns of most items within 30 days of delivery13, and TikTok Shop UK customers can request a return or refund for up to 30 days from delivery9.

In practice, return rates depend on how the product was bought. In the accounts we run, impulse-led lines on TikTok can see more “changed my mind” returns than the same product bought after a search on Amazon, especially in fashion and sizing-sensitive categories. That is our experience, not a published figure, so measure return rates per product on each channel before you commit budget.

Cash flow: when you actually get paid

This is the difference new brands most often underestimate.

  • Amazon holds funds until seven days after delivery as standard (“DD+7”), after which they can be paid out on your settlement cycle or on request12.
  • TikTok Shop UK puts newly onboarded sellers, and sellers in a probation period, on a 31-day introductory settlement period, counted from delivery. The standard period after that is 8 days, and sellers who meet TikTok’s performance criteria can move to 3-day or 1-day settlement6.

So in your first months on TikTok Shop, you pay for stock, samples, shipping and content, and wait more than a month after delivery for the sales income. If a video takes off in week three, you need the cash to restock before the money from those orders arrives. Plan the working capital before you launch.

Content: the cost that never stops

On Amazon, most of the content cost comes at the start: photography, a clear title and bullet points, A+ Content and a Brand Store. It then needs upkeep, not constant renewal. Our guides to Amazon listing optimisation and A+ Content design cover what good looks like.

TikTok Shop needs new content every week. Videos wear out in days, creators need briefing, samples and follow-up, and live selling needs presenters and planning. If nobody in the business can own that rhythm, either budget for someone who can or start on Amazon.

How the two channels work together

The strongest position is usually both, with each doing the job it is best at: TikTok creating demand, Amazon capturing it.

We have seen this pattern in accounts we manage. A UK brand we work with had a TikTok video take off with no advertising behind it, and over the following days its Amazon sales rose sharply while its Amazon advertising stayed unchanged. Comments under the video asked where to buy, and many viewers went to Amazon, where they already had an account and Prime delivery. That is our observation, not a published statistic, and it does not happen for every video or product.

It is also invisible in TikTok Shop’s own reports, which only count sales made in the app. To measure it:

  • Track branded searches on Amazon in the Search Query Performance dashboard in Brand Analytics, which shows search volume, impressions, clicks, basket adds and purchases for queries related to your brand14. Compare the weeks before and after a TikTok push.
  • Judge both channels on combined profit, not each channel’s return on ad spend. Cutting TikTok because its in-app return looks weak can quietly cut Amazon sales too.
  • Keep pricing coherent across channels. Different pack sizes or bundles per channel reduce direct price comparisons.

Once both are running, our guide to running Amazon, TikTok Shop and your own site together covers channel roles, pricing, shared stock and profit per channel.

Adding the second channel

Whichever channel you start with, add the second once the first is profitable and running without the founder doing everything. From Amazon, bring your best-reviewed product to TikTok with a creator brief built around what reviewers praise. From TikTok, bring your proven hero product to Amazon, with a listing written for the searches your videos have started, and put a small amount of advertising behind your brand terms.

If you are also weighing up how to sell on Amazon itself, our guide to Vendor Central vs Seller Central applies the same product-by-product thinking.

Channel choice is downstream of unit economics. Pick the channel where the margin is strongest and commit to it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Amazon for UK sellers?
On platform fees, usually yes, but once creator commission and content are counted, often not: TikTok Shop UK charges 9% including VAT for most categories (source 1), against Amazon’s 15% referral fee plus fulfilment fees (source 10). But most TikTok Shop sales come through creators, whose commission you set and pay on top, and you need a steady flow of content. Once those are counted, TikTok Shop is often the more expensive channel per sale.
What commission does TikTok Shop UK take in 2026?
TikTok Shop UK takes a 9% commission, including VAT, for most categories. At 30 September 2026, TikTok’s UK pages give a 9% commission rate, inclusive of VAT, with a reduced effective rate of 5% for specified Electronics and Beauty & Personal Care categories (sources 1, 2). It is charged on the order total including customer-paid shipping and platform-funded discounts (source 3). We found no 2026 change to the UK rate; check Seller Center for current incentives.
Does TikTok Shop have fulfilment like Amazon FBA in the UK?
Yes. Fulfilled by TikTok Shop (FBT) operates in the UK: you send stock to a TikTok-run warehouse and it picks, packs and ships orders for storage, handling and shipping fees (source 7). You can also ship yourself through TikTok’s own shipping service, Shipped via Platform, which charges from a published rate card; a new card applies to parcels delivered from 1 November 2026 (source 8).
How quickly does TikTok Shop pay UK sellers?
TikTok Shop pays UK sellers 31 days after delivery at first, then 8 days as standard. New sellers are on a 31-day introductory settlement period, counted from delivery. After that the standard period is 8 days from delivery, with faster 3-day and 1-day tiers for sellers who meet TikTok’s performance criteria (source 6). Amazon releases funds seven days after delivery as standard (source 12).
Does TikTok Shop increase Amazon sales?
It can, though TikTok’s own reports won’t show it. In the accounts we run, we have seen Amazon sales and branded searches rise in the days after a TikTok video performs well, with no change to Amazon advertising. That is our observation, not a published statistic. To test it for your brand, watch branded search terms in Amazon’s Search Query Performance dashboard (source 14) around your TikTok pushes.
Should I launch on TikTok Shop and Amazon at the same time?
Only if you have the team to do both properly. Each channel needs a different kind of work: search-ready listings, reviews and advertising discipline on Amazon; a weekly flow of video and creator management on TikTok. With a small team, start where your product fits best, prove it, then add the second channel.
