Is TikTok Shop right for your product? Five tests before you spend
Every agency selling TikTok Shop will tell you your brand belongs there. Some brands do. Some products are a long shot in a short video, some can't carry a creator's commission, and some brands have nobody to run a shop every day. Here are the five tests we use, a per-order sum you can copy, and what to do if the answer is not yet.
Cover designed for Mr. Prime.
The short answer
Key takeaways
- Run five tests per product, not per brand: does it show well in a short video, is the price an impulse buy, is there margin after every TikTok cost, can you supply creators weekly, and can someone run the shop daily.
- The margin test is one sum per order: price less VAT, TikTok’s 9% commission, creator commission, samples, ads, shipping and the product. Work out the highest creator rate the product can pay. If it is below TikTok’s suggested 10% to 15% average, few creators will pick it.
- TikTok’s UK rules are operational: with Ship by TikTok you must hand an order to the carrier within 2 working days, and an order not handed over within 7 working days is cancelled automatically.
- Your Shop Performance Score, with your sales and probation status, sets how fast you are paid: sellers in probation wait 31 days from delivery, and the fastest tier pays in 1 day.
- If a product fails a test, the answer is not yet. Fix Amazon conversion and margin first, test your own short videos, and come back with a product that passes.

From Robert Prime and the Mr. Prime team, who manage Amazon advertising for founder-led UK and European brands: £2.5m of ad spend across our client accounts in the last 12 months. We also run TikTok Shop for brands, and judge it on profit per order, not on sales.
If you sell well on Amazon, someone has probably told you that you need to be on TikTok Shop. Usually it is an agency that sells TikTok Shop. We are one of those agencies, so read this with that in mind. But we also say no to it, because a shop that loses money on every creator order does the brand no good and does us no good either.
This guide is for brands already on Amazon. If you are choosing your first channel, our guide to TikTok Shop or Amazon first covers that decision. Here the question is narrower: should this product go on TikTok Shop now?
Run the tests per product, not per brand
A brand is rarely all right or all wrong for TikTok Shop. One product in a range can be perfect for a short video while the rest are not. So take your top five or ten Amazon products and put each one through the tests below. A product needs to pass all five.
- Does it show well in a short video? Can a viewer see the point in a few seconds, with the sound off?
- Is the price an impulse buy? Will someone buy it in the scroll, without checking with anyone?
- Is there margin after every TikTok cost? Commission, creator commission, samples, ads, shipping and the product.
- Can you supply creators every week? Samples, briefs and a way to filter who gets them.
- Can someone run it every day? Dispatch, customer service and shop health.
Test 1: Does it show well in a short video?
Amazon shoppers arrive looking for something. TikTok viewers did not plan to buy anything until a video changed their mind. So the product has to make its own case on screen, fast.
In the shops we run, the products that sell through video share a few traits. Our view, not a TikTok rule:
- The result is visible. A before and after, a mess cleaned up, a problem solved in front of the camera.
- It does something satisfying or surprising. A clever fold, a pour, a sound, a reaction.
- It needs no specification sheet. If buyers compare dimensions, compatibility or ingredients before they buy, they will go and search, and that search often ends on Amazon, not in the TikTok app.
We have seen this go both ways. We pitched TikTok Shop to one brand, and on a closer look their products were a long shot for short video. The brand lost interest in TikTok Shop, and later hired us for their Amazon account. That was the right result.
The quick check: film the product on a phone for fifteen seconds with no voiceover. Show it to five people who have not seen it. If they can’t tell you what it does and why they would want it, it fails this test.
Test 2: Is the price an impulse buy?
A TikTok sale happens in the scroll. The viewer decides in the moment, without opening another tab to compare. That favours prices people pay without thinking twice, and works against products that need a household discussion first.
TikTok does not publish a price limit, and we won’t invent one. Two practical checks instead:
- Would you buy it from a video without checking reviews elsewhere? If the honest answer is no, your customers probably won’t either.
- Does the price leave room for the margin test below? Cheap products often pass the impulse test and then fail the margin test, because the fixed costs of an order (shipping, samples, the product itself) take a larger share of a small price. The worked example below shows how.
If your best Amazon product is a considered purchase, look further down the range. An accessory, a refill or a starter pack may pass where the main product does not.
Test 3: Is there margin after every TikTok cost?
This is the test most brands skip, and the one that decides whether TikTok Shop makes money.
TikTok’s own fee is low. Its UK page says: “The Commission Fee rate, inclusive of applicable taxes, including but not limited to Value Added Tax (VAT), is 9%“1. A lower rate can apply to Electronics and “a select number of Beauty & Personal Care categories"6: products in specified categories there pay an effective 5%, as our fees guide explains. But most of what a TikTok order costs is spending you choose:
- Creator commission. You set a rate per product. TikTok’s UK playbook says “10%-15% will be an average commission rate”, and lets you set anything between 1% and 80%2.
- Samples. Creators want the product before they post. “Offering free samples or not is up to your choice”, says TikTok, but products with free samples “are more likely to be picked up by creators"2.
- Ads. Most TikTok Shop advertising now runs through GMV Max.
- Shipping, through TikTok’s own service, Fulfilled by TikTok or your own courier.
Our TikTok Shop fees guide covers each of these in detail, including how TikTok works out the commission and the VAT inside it.
A worked example: two products, one sum
Here are two products from the same imaginary brand, both sold on a creator’s video, with free delivery. The figures are invented and every line is rounded to the penny, but the method is the one we use. We count the full 9% to stay cautious; a VAT-registered brand can normally reclaim the VAT inside it, which our fees guide explains.
| Per creator order | Product A | Product B |
|---|---|---|
| Customer pays | £19.99 | £11.99 |
| VAT (one sixth of the price) | −£3.33 | −£2.00 |
| TikTok commission at 9% | −£1.80 | −£1.08 |
| Creator commission at 15% | −£3.00 | −£1.80 |
| Samples, spread across the orders they bring | −£0.80 | −£0.80 |
| GMV Max at 10% of the price | −£2.00 | −£1.20 |
| Shipping | −£2.60 | −£2.60 |
| Landed cost of the product | −£5.00 | −£3.50 |
| Profit per order | £1.46 | −£0.99 |
Check the sums. Product A: £3.33 + £1.80 + £3.00 + £0.80 + £2.00 + £2.60 + £5.00 = £18.53 of costs, and £19.99 − £18.53 = £1.46. Product B: £2.00 + £1.08 + £1.80 + £0.80 + £1.20 + £2.60 + £3.50 = £12.98 of costs, and £11.99 − £12.98 = −£0.99.
Product B loses money on every creator order. Its price is a perfect impulse buy, but the shipping, the sample and the product leave nothing for anyone else.
The highest creator rate each product can pay
The more useful number is the creator rate at which an order stops making money. Add the creator commission back to the profit, and divide by the price.
Highest creator commission you can afford
Highest creator rate = profit before creator commission ÷ price
Profit before creator commission is the profit per order with the creator line added back. Keep the other costs at your own figures.
- Product A: £1.46 + £3.00 = £4.46 before creator commission. £4.46 ÷ £19.99 = 22.3%.
- Product B: −£0.99 + £1.80 = £0.81 before creator commission. £0.81 ÷ £11.99 = 6.8%.
Product A can pay creators the 10% to 15% TikTok suggests2 and keep a profit. Product B can’t pay even 10%, so few creators will pick it over products that pay them more. That is a fail for creator sales, whatever the video looks like.
Put each product’s Amazon profit per unit next to this, from the Profit X-Ray. If the TikTok creator order makes much less than the same product on Amazon, the shop has to bring sales you would never have had to be worth it. Test 4: Can you supply creators every week?
On TikTok Shop, creators do most of the selling for a new shop. That makes them a supply chain of their own: samples out, videos back, every week. Videos wear out in days, so this never stops.
TikTok gives you two ways to work with creators. An open collaboration lets every creator promote a product at the rate you set; a targeted one invites a chosen group at a custom rate2. Free samples, TikTok says, “can only be enabled in products that are on Open Collaboration"2, and to help you decide who gets one it shows you the creator’s GMV, fulfilment rate and amount of content posted2.
Those filters matter. Another brand came to us after running its TikTok Shop with nobody in charge. The shop was flooded with free-sample requests from creators with few views. Each sample cost product and postage, whether or not a video followed. What the brand wanted was someone to run it for them.
To pass this test you need:
- A sample budget, set per product, that the margin test above has already paid for.
- Rules for who gets a sample: past sales, the share of samples they turn into videos, and whether their audience matches your buyer.
- Someone to brief and chase creators every week, and to cut the ones who take samples and never post.
Our TikTok Shop affiliate guide covers commission plans, samples and choosing creators who pay back.
Test 5: Can someone run it every day?
Amazon FBA takes most of the daily work off you. TikTok Shop puts much of it back, and TikTok’s UK rules are specific.
Dispatch. TikTok’s UK shipping policy says “The Seller must pack the Package within two working days from receipt of the order"3. If you use Ship by TikTok, you have 2 working days to hand the package to the carrier. If it is not handed over within 7 working days, TikTok’s table says the order is cancelled automatically3. If you ship with your own approved courier, the agreed timeframe is delivery within 4 working days3. A viral video on a Friday is a lot of parcels by Tuesday.
Shop health. TikTok scores every shop from 0 to 5 on its Shop Performance Score, once it has “delivered at least 30 orders (excluding fake orders and sample orders) in the past 60 calendar days"4. The score is built from six metrics across product satisfaction, fulfilment and customer service4, and TikTok says “top sellers generally perform at or above 4 points"4.
Customer service. Since July 2026, “IM Dissatisfaction Rate and After-Sales Handling Time will replace 24-Hour Response Rate and Customer Complaint Rate"4. In plain terms: TikTok now measures whether customers rate your chat replies badly, and how long you take to handle refund, return, cancellation and replacement requests. Someone needs to be in the inbox every working day.
Cash. The score also helps decide how fast you are paid. New sellers and sellers in probation wait 31 days from delivery. The standard period is 8 days. Faster tiers pay in 3 days for a score from 3.0 to below 3.5, or 1 day for 3.5 or higher, if you also pass TikTok’s sales thresholds and are out of probation5. A shop that ships late and answers slowly is paid slowly, while it pays creators, samples and ads up front.
To pass this test, name the person who will dispatch, answer chats and watch the score every working day, and check they have the hours. Our guide to selling on TikTok Shop in the UK covers setup, probation and the first weeks.
Scoring your products
Put your top products in a table and be strict. A product passes only if it passes all five tests.
| Test | Pass | Not yet |
|---|---|---|
| Short video | Strangers get the point in 15 seconds with the sound off | Needs explaining, comparing or measuring |
| Impulse price | You would buy it from a video without checking elsewhere | Buyers compare before they buy |
| Margin | Highest affordable creator rate is above 15% | Below 10% |
| Creator supply | Sample budget, filter rules and a named person | Samples go to whoever asks |
| Daily running | Named person, dispatch inside 2 working days, inbox covered | Nobody owns it |
Between 10% and 15% on the margin test is a judgement call: the product can pay an average creator rate, but with little left for anything going wrong. We would start those with your own content only, and add creators once a video proves the product sells.
When the answer is not yet
Agencies that sell TikTok Shop rarely say “not yet”. It is often the right answer, and it costs you nothing to hear it. What to do instead depends on which test failed.
- Failed the video test. Keep the product on Amazon, where shoppers search and compare. Put the work into the listing and its conversion rate, which you can check with our listing checker. If another product in the range passes, take that one to TikTok instead.
- Failed the margin test. Look at a bundle, a multipack or a larger size that raises the order value without raising shipping much. Rerun the sum. Or sell it from your own videos only, with no creator commission and no creator samples; Product B makes £1.61 an order that way (−£0.99 + £1.80 + £0.80). If nothing passes, the product’s margin is the problem on every channel, not only on TikTok.
- Failed the creator or daily-running tests. These are staffing problems, not product problems. Either budget for someone to run the shop, or wait until you can. A shop opened without an owner tends to collect sample requests, late dispatches and a low score, and a low score is slow to recover.
- Passed everything but you are still unsure. Post your own short videos on TikTok for a few weeks before opening a shop. Our TikTok fees guide shows why own-content orders are the most profitable kind: no creator commission. If nobody watches your own videos, creators will struggle too.
Whichever it is, write down the date you will run the tests again. A product that fails today may pass after a price change, a new pack size or a hire.
Where TikTok Shop fits once you’re ready
Our view of how the channels work together is simple: TikTok creates demand, Amazon converts it, and your own store keeps the customer. A brand already strong on Amazon is in a good position, because some of the people who see your product on TikTok will go and search for it on Amazon, where they already have an account. TikTok Shop’s own reports don’t count those sales, so measure them separately: our guide to running Amazon, TikTok Shop and your own site together shows how, and our view of omnichannel selling in 2027 explains why one channel alone is a risk.
That halo is a reason to add TikTok Shop once your products pass. It is not a reason to skip the tests. A shop that loses money on every creator order does not become profitable because some viewers bought on Amazon instead.
If you would like a second opinion on which of your products pass, the margin test is part of every Profit Audit.

How this guide was made
Written by Robert Prime and reviewed by Stephen Harrison at Mr. Prime, which runs Amazon and TikTok Shop accounts for UK brands and sells TikTok Shop management itself: read it with that in mind. We used AI tools to help research and draft it; Robert edited it and takes responsibility for it. Every TikTok Shop fee and rule was read on TikTok Shop’s own UK Seller Center pages on 26 October 2026, and quoted word for word. The worked examples use invented figures and say so.
Every figure above links to the primary source it came from, and we recheck them when Amazon changes its fees or definitions. Read our editorial standards. Spotted something wrong? Tell us through our contact page and we will correct it and note the change here.
