Why did my Amazon variations split from the parent, and how do I fix it?

A size or colour on its own page is cut off from the rest of the family, so shoppers can't compare the options. Here are the causes Amazon names, the fix for each, and why a fix sometimes seems not to work.

The short answer

Amazon names four common causes: missing variation details on a child, a different variation theme on parent and child, duplicate attributes (shadow ASINs), and errors on the parent (source 1). Find which one, correct the data and re-link the child. Amazon also reserves the right to remove families that break its rules (source 3), so check the family belongs together.

Key takeaways

  1. Amazon names four common causes of broken variations. Check the parent first if the whole family broke.
  2. Detaching a child or ungrouping a family keeps sales history, reviews and ratings. Ungrouping deletes the parent ASIN from your catalogue.
  3. Your change removes only your contribution. If another seller offers the same family, it stays on the page.
  4. You can’t change a variation theme after creation. Create a new family and move the children.

What could be going on?

What you seeCould meanWhat to do
One child suddenly on its own pageMissing or duplicate variation details, or a theme that doesn’t match the parent1Compare it with a healthy child. Correct the values and add it back through the parent’s Variations tab3
Whole family brokeErrors on the parent. Amazon says these can stop the whole family1Fix the parent’s errors first, then the children
Child in your inventory, not on the pageInactive, no stock, or already in another family1Check status and stock. Wait 24 hours, then contact support
Can’t add a child at allA child is Inactive2, or the brand or product type differs3Make every child active. Keep them the same brand and product type, because a mismatch may stop a child being added
Wrong variation themeIt can’t be changed after creation2Create a new family with the right theme and move the children

Will I lose my reviews?

Amazon says that detaching a child or ungrouping a family keeps sales history, reviews and ratings on the products. Ungrouping deletes the parent ASIN from your catalogue3. Timing differs across Amazon’s pages: one says wait 24 hours before contacting support1, and another says allow 96 hours for reviews, or up to a week at peak2.

What if other sellers are on the listing?

Your change removes only your contribution. If another seller offers the same family, it stays on the page3. This can be why a fix seems not to work.

How do I stop it happening again?

  1. Check parent and child links after every bulk upload or listing edit.
  2. Before adding a child, confirm its variation values are unique in the family.
  3. Keep one record of the correct parent for each product.

What we have seen

In the 12 months of work we reviewed. How we counted.

  • In a few accounts, different products had been grouped as variations and needed separating. Keep families to true variations.
  • In a few accounts, products sat outside any family and were merged in later, or a whole range was listed separately.

How this guide was made

Written by Robert Prime and reviewed by Atouka Tsochataridis at Mr. Prime, which runs Amazon accounts for UK brands. We used AI tools to help research and draft it; Robert edited it and takes responsibility for it. Every rule was checked against the Amazon UK page listed above on 5 November 2026. Where Amazon’s own pages differ, we say so.

Every figure above links to the primary source it came from, and we recheck them when Amazon changes its fees or definitions. Read our editorial standards. Spotted something wrong? Tell us through our contact page and we will correct it and note the change here.
